Ilaria Biasato

Role: Type B fixed-term Researcher

Affiliation: Department of Agricultural, Forest and Food Sciences (DISAFA), University of Turin

After graduating in Veterinary Medicine in 2013 at the Department of Veterinary Sciences of the University of Turin (Italy), I got my PhD in Veterinary Sciences for Animal Health and Food Safety in 2018 at the same Department, discussing a thesis about the use of insect meals in poultry feeding. In particular, my research activity focuses on farming and nutrition of poultry and fish species, evaluating the influence of the use of insect-based products (larvae, meals and oils) on productive performance, gut health (with a particular focus on the microbiota and/or microbiome) and quality of the final products. Furthermore, since 2020, my research activities also deal with farming and nutrition of the two insect species most used as feed ingredients (Hermetia illucens and Tenebrio molitor), evaluating the effect of various by-products and/or agri-food waste on their growth performance, bioconversion efficiency, development and nutritional profile, and analyzing their nutrient requirements.

My tasks in the project are the coordination of UNITO-DISAFA research group, the experimental design and coordination of Hermetia illucens and Tenebrio molitor larvae trials, the experimental design and coordination of fish growth trials, the PhD and master student scholarship supervisor, the dissemination actions, the coordination of the intensive 2-day Young Researchers Training Course at UNITO, and the preparation of scientific articles.
